“Mobile-friendly” is an important factor in the always-moving-target for Google search ranking. On April 21, 2015 Google introduced a major change to search results from smartphones. What’s the big deal? Google’s thought process about this change is that websites viewed on smartphones must be readable without zooming in and out of the tiny screen. When smartphone users go to a website whose text they can hardly read or the pages are optimized for desktops, they will not stay on these sites for long. So why put these sites on top of the search results?
That is where the rub is for those sites which are not “mobile-friendly” according to Google’s definition. In the search results, a “mobile-friendly” message notification shows up when “Google thinks the site works well on a mobile device.” See the first screenshot on this post.
